Why I use Prompts Instead of Poses with Kids (and adults, too!)

Children

By shots by amo - Hamilton, OH

When people book a session with me, one of the first things they say is, "We're not great at posing." And my answer is always: Perfect- you don't have to be. At Shots by AMO, I focus on capturing candid, genuine moments that reflect who you really are, not fake smiles or stiff poses.

Especially with kids, asking them to sit still and smile can lead to frustration (for everyone). But give them a fun prompt like, "Show me your superhero pose!" or "Whisper a secret to mom," and suddenly the pressure is gone. What takes its place? Real laughter, connection, and joy.

Prompts make magic

I use prompts instead of traditional posing because they help you feel more relaxed and natural. Whether it's a child twirling in the grass, a couple walking hand-in-hand, or a senior showing off their real smile, prompts create moments that don't feel forced.

Here are a few of my favorite kid-friendly prompts:

  • "Whisper a secret in your siblings ear."
  • "Run to that tree and back like you're in a race."
  • "Can you jump as high as you can on 3?"

And yes-even adults get prompts. You might hear me say:

  • "Look at each other and laugh like you just heard an inside joke."
  • "Hold hands and bump into each other like you're drunk."

What to expect at your session

If you're nervous about being in front of the camera, don't worry. I love creating a space where you can just be you. I'll guide you with simple prompts and keep the atmosphere fun and laid-back. No pressure. No "perfect pose." Just moments you'll actually remember-and love to look back on.
