What to Wear for Your Photo Session

Client Tips

By shots by amo - Hamilton, OH

You've booked your photo session (yay!) and now the big question hits: "What should we wear?" Don't stress- I've got you! Outfits can totally affect the look and feel of your photos, but with a few simple tips, you'll be camera-ready and confident.

1. Keep it simple + coordinated

Think coordinating colors and complementary tones. Choose 2-3 base colors, then mix textures and layers for interest.

  • Try this: Earthy neutrals like beige, rust, cream, olive or denim work beautifully in outdoor sessions

2. Choose comfort first

You'll look your best when you feel your best. Choose clothes that fit well and allow for movement-especially for kids! Avoid anything too tight, itchy, or stiff.

  • Bonus Tip: If your kid hates that cute outfit you picked-don't force it. A happy kid in a favorite hoodie beats a grumpy one in a button-up.

3. Avoid distracting patterns and logos

Subtle patterns? Yes. Loud prints or logos? Not so much. These can pull attention away from your faces and interrupt the flow of the photo.

4. Dress for the season and location

Think about your session setting. Will we be in a park? Downtown? Indoors? Layering is great for the fall, sundresses are beautiful in spring/summer, and boots + scarves can add cozy vibes in the winter.

5. Don't forget the details

Accessories like hats, jewelry, and boots can bring personality to your outfit. Just don't overdo it-let you shine.

  • Hair + Makeup Tip: Natural, polished looks photograph well.
